What's New
Here you'll find the latest features and improvements added to TernaryPlot.com, organized by month.
TernaryPlot.com now supports importing and exporting plot data in Excel (.xlsx) format, making it easier to work with your data in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or other spreadsheet software.
Key features:
- Export to Excel (free). Save your plot data to an Excel workbook with separate sheets for Points, Lines, Areas, Text, and plot metadata (axis labels, template, legend position)
- Import from Excel (premium). Load data from Excel files that you've exported or created following the same structure
- Metadata preservation. Automatically saves and restores plot settings like axis labels and template selection
- Data validation. Validates all imported data and shows clear error messages for invalid values
- Round-trip editing. Export (free), edit in Excel, and import back (premium) with all data and settings preserved
Click the Export button to save your plot as Excel (free for all users). Click Import and select Excel (.xlsx) to load from Excel (requires premium subscription).
Important: When importing Excel files, your data must conform to the expected format. Sheet names and column headers must match exactly, and all values must be valid (correct colors, symbols, number ranges, etc.). Invalid data will cause validation errors during import.
Note: Callouts and legend items are excluded from Excel exports since they're primarily interactive UI elements. For complete backups including these elements, use the Full plot (.json) export instead.
See the Excel documentation for more details.
You can now add callouts to your plots for annotations and labels. Callouts support arrows pointing to specific locations on your plot and can be positioned anywhere, including outside the plot boundaries.
To add a callout, click the Insert menu above the plot and select Draw Callout. Click to place the callout head (where the arrow points), then drag to position the label text.
Tip: Disable clipping in the Background section of the configuration menu to allow callouts to extend beyond the plot area.
See the Callouts documentation for full details.
A new zoom inset feature allows you to create a magnified view of a specific region of your plot within the same visualization. This is useful for showing detail in areas with dense data while maintaining the context of the full plot.
See the Zoom Inset documentation for more information.
A powerful new Scales feature allows you to automatically map data values to visual properties. This makes it easy to visualize patterns in your data by assigning colors, sizes, or symbols based on your data values.
The scales feature:
- **Automatically detects whether your data is numeric or categorical
- Maps to size. Scale point sizes based on numeric values using linear, logarithmic, or other scale types
- Maps to color. Apply color gradients (for numeric data) or discrete color schemes (for categories)
- Maps to symbol. Assign different shapes to different categories
- Preview legend. See a downloadable legend preview before applying the transformation
To use scales, add your data values to the "value" column in the points table, then click the Scales button in the table toolbar.
Two new example datasets have been added to help you get started:
- Coffee. Composition data for different espresso coffee drink varieties
- Baked Goods. Ingredient proportions for various baked goods
Access these datasets by clicking the Datasets button in the data toolbar.
Several user interface enhancements have been made:
- Improved menu styles for better readability and consistency
- New dedicated menu for visibility toggles (points, lines, areas, text)
- More consistent use of icons throughout the application
- Better organized plot toolbar for easier access to features
CSV upload now provides clearer warnings and validation messages when your data doesn't match the expected format. This helps you quickly identify and fix issues with your data files.
The documentation and FAQ have been expanded with more examples, clearer explanations, and additional details about new features like scales, callouts, and domain configuration.
